Ok,
call this a rant, call it an observation, but for a long time now I’ve
noticed, that interior designers have an incredibly easy outlet available
to them whenever they want.
There are so many damn decorating shows on TV now, that it has become impossibly convenient to get access to the latest buzz in this field.
They don’t have to get up, they don’t have to read books, or subscribe to trade journals, all they have to do is pick up the remote, and viola! Instant access to what is hot in their industry, what their peers are thinking, and ideas to draw inspiration from.
And if that wasn’t enough it just seems to be snowballing. My poor Tivo can’t keep up with the multitude of new decorating shows that are hitting the air. (I live with an aspiring interior designer) And I must say, I would kill to have access to such a valuable, and easy way to take the pulse of my chosen field. It really is disgusting.
Yes, I’m jealous. I can’t help it. I’m constantly looking at the world around me for inspiration, and yes, graphic design does surround us too. But it takes a little effort to see quality content-there’s so much bad work in our industry-and it definitely takes a lot more effort to see and hear what our peers have to say.
I want a graphic design channel, damn it.
I think it would be only fair, and while it’s arguable that there probably isn’t the same market of amateur interest in Graphic Design, as in Interior Design, I think there is enough of a market for at least one show. (Unless I’m missing something there is no equivalent to “Trading Spaces” for us)
I mean, even the fashion designers have Project Runaway.
Where’s our nitch show?
