After
Bush’s narrow victory in last November’s election, I’ve
been waiting for the backlash, the “I told you so’s”, the
indignant attitudes. I was shocked at the lack of this in the days following
the election, and leading up to the inauguration. Enough talk of “healing
the nation” and “coming together” was passed over the airwaves
that even I was beginning to wonder if maybe it was heartfelt.
In
the last few weeks I can see that was all just posturing.
Through the nomination of
several key positions, Bush has done what I feel is the political equivalent
of “flipping the bird” at all of his opponents.
Allow me to elaborate.
Let’s start with the appointment of John Bolton as US Ambassador to
the United Nations. Here we have a guy who in 1994 said at a Federalist Society
forum that "there is no such thing as the United Nations." And "If
the U.N. secretary building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make
a bit of difference,"
Um… HOLY CRAP!
Ok, now lets look at Paul Wolfowitz. One of the chief architects of the Iraq
invasaion. A man who sits high on the list of hawks in the Neocon cadre. As
Deputy Defense Secretary.
When asked why he chose Wolfowitz to lead the World Bank, Bush responded he
had experience leading a large organization. (The Pentagon)
Hmm so let me get this straight. This is a man who helped bring about one
of the most unpopular wars in American history, who has gone on the record
saying that said war would be funded almost entirely by the oil revenue’s
of the very country we were invading. (hmm, not so good at the math on that
one Paul) Whose best qualification was previously managing an organization
whose primary responsibility was to wage war. And we’re going to put
him in charge of the World Bank?!?
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
