Dashfabulator August 4th 2005
Despite
its naysayers, it would appear that the concept of the Dashboard is here to
stay. This week the
number of widgets available at Apple.com topped 1,000 and it doesn't appear
to be slowing. With a growing community of 3rd party developers jumping on-board
producing everything from mini applications that track
German TV schedules, to random Simposons
quotes, the Tiger dashboard is quickly becoming a mainstay of the modern
Mac user.
If that weren't enough, the originator of this whole widget frenzy Konfabulator
(you know, the guys who Apple stole the idea from) was purchased by Yahoo
last week, making this cool technology available to all PC users for free.
(originally there was a $20 registration fee) I do find it a little surprising
that Apple so blatantly copied Konfabulator, and whats even more shocking,
it doesn't appear that any challenge was ever made regarding the intellectual
property that was wholesaley stolen from Arlo Rose & Perry Clarke. Normally
I have crazy amounts of respect for Apple (on the whole I feel they're on
the positive end of the corporate karma spectrum) but this was a bad move
on their part. One that it would seem is paying off for them quite handsomely...
