 Firefox Fixes July 10th 2005
For the past month or so I've been struggling with a couple of issues that have pretty much kept me from using Firefox on my PowerBook. I finally had enough free time to sit down this weekend and address these issues. And since I'm sure I'm not the only one who's run into this stuff, I'll post what I found in the hopes other can benefit from it.

The main thing that has kept me from using Firefox is the way it misinterprets track-pad scrolling. Since purchasing my PowerBook a few short weeks ago, I've become addicted to using the two-fingered scrolling feature Apple added to their new laptops. (it's very intuitive, and makes surfing a hellofalot easier) But when using this feature in Firefox, it would very often misinterpret the up/down scrolling for a right/left moment, and send me to the previous page I was browsing. This got old very quickly, and I ran back to Safari for all my web activity. But there are few things I like better about Firefox, so I did some digging and discovered if you type about:config in the the address bar it will take you to an advanced configuration window, all you have to do is scroll down to the mousewheel.horizscroll.withnokey.action preference, and change the value to zero. Viola! No more problem.

Another issue that's been nagging me for a while is when trying to use Firefox to access Hotmail, the usual RTF editor would be missing, and in its place was just raw HTML. Harry Patsis has been working on an extension called eWebmail Color and Graphics. Although its still in beta, it appears to work pretty damn good. Worth a peek if you access Hotmail with Firefox.
